Every season, we watch trekkers arrive in Lukla with duffel bags stuffed full of gear they'll never touch - and missing the two or three things that actually matter above 4,000m. This list comes from years of guiding this exact route, not a generic gear-shop checklist.
The non-negotiables
These aren't optional. If you forget one of these, we will find you a replacement in Namche before you go any further.
- A proper down jacket rated for at least -15°C
- Broken-in waterproof hiking boots-never brand new
- A 4-season sleeping bag, even if your teahouse promises blankets
- Sunglasses with UV protection (snow blindness is real and it's miserable)
- A basic personal first-aid kit with blister care
What Surprises People
The cold isn't the hard part-the sun is. At altitude, UV exposure is brutal even on a "cold" day. Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF matter more than people expect.
Your phone charger will die faster than you think. Cold drains batteries quickly, and charging stations along the trail cost money per charge. A power bank is worth its weight.
Cotton is the enemy. It holds moisture and takes forever to dry at altitude. Stick to synthetic or wool base layers, even for socks.
What You Can Skip
We see this gear left behind in teahouse lost-and-founds every season:
- Multiple pairs of jeans (you won't wear them, and they're heavy when wet)
- A full-size travel pillow (rolled-up clothing works fine)
- More than two changes of hiking clothes - you re-wear on the trail
- A second pair of full hiking boots "just in case"
Renting vs. Buying in Kathmandu
